ok i finally got to one and i liked the drafting but before i get into the deck and how i did and such i have got something to get off of my chest.
Why the Hell do People draw?????? Seriously unless you are already in top 8 it is pointless and potentially bad. because if you lose next round you are dream crushed and you knocked out but if you win which you shouldn't then you make it. Now i do not mind people who are both undefeated and if they draw they each make top 8 and top 8 is next round then ok that i can understand. But to draw in round 2 for no reason and then knock people who have undefeated streaks out of top 8 over a mulligan is just wrong. I swear with all reads as my witness, if i go to a pro tour, ptq, grand pre, or any other huge event i will NEVER draw. i will earn my spot.
ahh, now i feel better (actually i don't but alas) onward to the draft. you ever opena rare that demands you full devotion? i did, pack 1 picks in order: nantuko shade, dark tutalge, reassembling skeleton, stormtide levithan, augry owl, foresee, viscera seer, .... pack 2 i first picked rise from gave and got passed mind control, assassinate, mind control, lillan's specter, lilian's specter, aether adept, aether adept..... and in pack 3 i got another skeleton, temple bell, bloodthron vampire, bloodthorn vampire, whispersilk, and such. so here is what my mind concocted

i know most people think the tutelage is not worth the effort but i disagree, with all the scry i had i only took 2 damage the whole entire time i had it out. in round one i slaughtered my opponent cause his deck was slow and he got out his air servant on 4 only to have me steal it on 5 and continue to pound him with it and my people, and in game 2 i just got off the shade and then the cloak and he had no answer to me equipping it so i just killed him with swamps. in round 2 i played against a mono-white deck that had ajani's matra on 2 both games so in game 1 i had to use the levithan to slow him down and pound his skull in, and in game two i used the vampire with cloak and the skeleton to deal 21 damage them 21 again next turn. In round 3 i found out about the draw situationa and found out that if i did not win i would be knocked out of top 8. so in game 1 i had to mulligan, auto lose. and in game 2 he had mana screw, so game 3 was our actual real game and he sqeaked out the win by stealing my leviathan and then throwing and ember hauler at me. to kill me. so for going 2/1/0 i got 10th place which sucks i swear we should do 4 round instead of 3 if more then 24 people come.
Was this sanctioned? 24 people requires 5 rounds if that's the case.
ReplyDelete@Mafia: This place that holds these events are pretty serious about not being there all night, up to the point where they adjust their prize structure to encourage top 8/4 splits since there is little +EV in playing it out. Plus, 5 rounds means you either play too many people within your pod, or you play random decks in the last(and most important) round, though doing so would cut down your chances of running into someone who is 1-0-1.
ReplyDelete@OP: The main reason people draw in rounds one and two is because they are friends who don't want to knock one or the other out of contention. They look around at their potential matchups next round, and decide it's a better play to have to win next round rather than play a buddy. It feels scuzzy at times, but it's very common practice.
BTW, I used to think I would never draw in a big event(PTQs dont count, if you can single/double draw in you always do so), but I know now that if I had a chance to draw once or twice and put myself in a position to win a large event, I'm doing it. Perspective changes with where you stand.
yes it was sanctioned
ReplyDeletei still think i would not draw even given the chance to enter in round 3 or something with byes, i would still come to round 1 and deny the byes, i play magic to play not get free passes.
If they're so serious about not being there all night, they ought to run 8-man single elimination drafts. You can sanction those, and if they want to be pricks, make the prize payout equal for 1st and 2nd so there's no incentive to play a third round. I would seriously consider reporting them to the DCI if I were you because 3 rounds for 24 people IS NOT right.
